a one thirty ramble

i recently started researching this new topic of design and i think i just realized everything i want to do in life. and it's not print design, yet it is its own wonderful form of design that has always always always got me going. instead  of sitting in front of a computer all my life, i wanna create, construct, organize, be hands-on and shop. and apparently, that's the job of a prop stylist.

my fav part of design is solving the problem and i don't do that enough in print design. i get a problem and work for two months to try and solve it.

it is thrilling, it is wonderful but..but...i like to solve it on the spot, find something that will work and wa-la! moving on. everything i'm reading about prop design seems to be that kind of pace.

i may love magazines and layouts - buuuuut mostly i love the compositions of the photographs. i flip through my 'real simple' and dig the design, the type, the colors...but the photos of the perfectly structured shelves, the odd sofa complimenting the 70s wallpaper motif...that's what makes me go 'me me meeee!'

but where do i start!?! eeeek. all these women i've been reading up on say it was recommendations, or knew someone in the business...of course. also, they all have interior design degreeees. well - i won't.  but as caitlin said - graphics is an awesome awesome jumping off point and from there i can at least get into art departments and start scoping out the stylists, seeing what they eat, drink, play and start to become one.

hrm, prop design?

Time Warp Toys

feedback from a critique couple weeks ago

everyone seemed to like it
got a lot of nods and ah-huhhhs

- wanted me to make the title page more useful, but it was just cut.
- audience: shoppers, feels modern, boyish
- wanted me to make my browse through page my home page so that it has a featured toy
- definitely web friendly
- little more nav once they're lost in the searches
- search nav could be the six squares, i.e. "the search results are..."
